The EV mileage tax is coming: here’s what it means for drivers and testers

27 November 2025  ·  MOT Expert

The Government has finally admitted what everyone already knew: Electric cars aren’t going to stay tax-free forever. From 2028, EVs are expected to pay tax per mile. Roughly 3p per mile based on current consultation.

Drive 10,000 miles a year? That’s around £300. Some people are already panicking, but the important part is how the Government will check your mileage. MOT stations become the proof. When you renew road tax (VED), you’ll tell them how many miles you’ve driven. The DVSA will compare that to the mileage logged at your MOT. If the numbers don’t match, there will be a problem – not a friendly reminder. This kills the odometer guessing games. MOT mileage becomes a tax tool, not just a number on a screen.

Vehicles under 3 years old? Because new cars don’t have an MOT yet, the Government is going to introduce extra mileage checks at MOT garages:

These are free to the driver. The Government will pay garages for the time. You won’t have to book a full MOT early. It’s a quick mileage validation. Think of it as a mileage checkpoint.

What does this mean for the average driver?

Drive more → pay more.

Drive less → pay less.

What does it mean for MOT testers? Mileage entry will become more serious than it already is. Right now, a typo is annoying. Soon, it will affect people’s tax bills.

So testers will need to:

The rumour mill says the DVSA may use diagnostic equipment to pull mileage directly from the car so there’s no argument. If that happens, it removes guesswork and nonsense which is good news for everyone.

The bottom line is EV drivers will eventually pay tax just like petrol and diesel drivers do, it’s just calculated differently.

MOT testers become the gatekeepers of truth. It’s not something to fear. It’s simple, trackable, and finally realistic.

We’ll keep breaking it down here at MOT Expert – clearly, simply.
